The “durable” power of attorney is an all-inclusive document that gives someone else the power to act on your behalf with regard to medical care and finances if you are no longer able to handle that responsibility.
Some people choose to authorize these powers with separate documents — one for health care and one for finances. That’s because you may want to make personal comments within each doctrine to help guide your selected representative as to your wishes. For example, you may not want your broker to know about your personal health issues, or for health care professionals to know details about your financial situation.1
Speak with your estate planning attorney about the best way to handle wills and power of attorney documents for your situation.
