Studies consistently reveal that people over age 65 tend to be the happiest of all adult demographics. In fact, peak happiness tends to begin around age 40 and increases incrementally from there. However, in a study of retirees, researchers found people who choose to keep working beyond age 65 (as opposed to having to work for financial reasons) tend to be much happier than their retired peers.
Interestingly, the reason people under 40 report being less happy is largely due to the competing demands of family life and work.5 Perhaps the solution is simple: Transfer more workplace responsibility onto the shoulders of people over 65, which makes them happier, while relieving some of the stress of middle-age workers.
