Water Down Your Diet

Just in case you don’t hear it enough, drinking lots of water is good for your health. A seven-year study of more than 18,000 adults published in 2016 yielded some pretty convincing results. Participants who drank the most water each day consumed the least calories and saturated fats, demonstrating the link between water intake and weight control.

Furthermore, these water drinkers consumed less sugar, salt and cholesterol, also indicative of better health. The study found that increasing plain water consumption by one to three cups a day tended to reduce the amount of calories consumed by 68 to 205 a day.1

The following are some additional facts associated with drinking water:2

  • Muscles are comprised of about 80 percent water, so athletes can lose up to 6 to 10 percent of their water weight via sweat alone. Drinking lots of water not only helps them stay hydrated, it can improve physical performance.
  • Mild dehydration (defined as 1 to 3 percent of fluid loss) can impair energy levels, depress mood and lead to a significant reduction in memory and brain performance.
  • Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraines for some people. Therefore, drinking water may help relieve headaches.
